What Happens during a Reading Intervention Session?
The following elements form the delivery of the programme:
- Reading an “easy” book/ section of a book (text that the child can read with 95% to 100% accuracy)
- Reading a book/section of book at “instructional” level (90% to 94% accuracy) Whilst reading the book, the trained teacher /teaching assistant takes a running record of their reading,
identifying the cues they use and marking up any errors they make
- Practising phonemes, letter formation and key words
- Undertaking phonological activities including those from Sound Linkage
- Writing a sentence/ short story
- Cutting up the sentence and reordering it
- Introduction to a new reading book chosen from the collection of graded/ levelled books for the programme
- Supporting the child to read the new book
- Re-reading the new book with the trained adult
